Windows Password Recovery and Reset
The Microsoft Windows operating system has several versions. As of 2011, consumers can only purchase the Windows 7 operating system. Although consumers can no longer purchase the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems, some aspect of these elder versions are still supported. Each operating system has recovery and reset options that require the user to be prepared in advance for the potential need for password recovery.

Password Reset Disc
-
Microsoft operating systems are not sold with accompanying password recovery discs. After installing and registering the operating system license, however, the user can create a password reset disc using the Forgotten Password Wizard. The reset disc allows the user to create a new password to gain entry into the administrator account.
Create Reset Disc
-
To create a password reset disc, place a formatted, blank data disc in your CD drive. Open the User Accounts and Family Safety section in the Windows Control Panel, and select the “Create a password reset disk” option. Follow the steps provided by the Forgotten Password Wizard. Do not remove the disc until the wizard informs you that the password reset disc creation is complete.

Administrator Reset
-
If you have forgotten your Windows password and are not the only administrator, request the administrator to reset your password. The administrator can remove the password using the “Remove Your Password” option in the User Accounts section of the Control Panel. Use this option, rather than the “Change Your Password” option, because the “Change Your Password” option requires the old password to create a new.
Reset Password
-
If Windows does not have another administrator and you do not have a password recovery disk, you will be unable to reset or recovery the password. You will have to reinstall the Windows operating system to gain entry to the computer. If you have your password reset recovery disc, place the disc in the computer. Close any password error messages that appear on the screen by clicking “OK.” Select the “Reset Password” option that appears toward the bottom of the screen. The password reset disc will walk you through a short process to reset your password. Do not discard the password reset disck as you can reuse the same disc to reset the password again, if needed.
