Use our planet as creative craft inspiration.

A creative way of celebrating Earth Day with your kindergartener is by making planet-inspired crafts with her. Turn the art project into a learning experience by teaching the child the importance of protecting the planet and all its creatures. Hands-on Earth-themed craft projects also make ideal birthday and slumber party activities.

  1. Paper Plate Earth

    • Transform a plain white paper plate into a blue and green Earth-themed craft. Supply the young child with a globe or map so she can become familiar with the continents. Cover the front of the plate with light- or medium-blue acrylic paint to represent water. After the blue paint dries, the child creates planets with green paint using the globe or map as a guide.

    Earth-Inspired Baked Goods

    • Encourage kindergarteners to play with their food while making Earth-inspired baked goods. The treats make tasty Earth Day party favors or desserts. As one idea, make cupcakes using your favorite recipe or mix. Top the cupcakes with blue frosting and make green continents with green decorator's sugar or frosting. Make round sugar cookie lollipops topped with blue and green icing as a whimsical touch.

    Earth Collage

    • Making an Earth-shaped collage using bits of magazine pages is a charming, eco-friendly craft project. Teach kindergarteners the importance of recycling as you recycle a magazine into art. Start by tearing small bits of green and blue paper from multiple magazine pages. Draw a circle on a piece of white construction paper and begin gluing the green and blue paper pieces onto the circle to resemble Earth.

    Earth Rocks

    • Encourage young children to get close to nature by gathering several large, round, flat rocks or stones from your yard or a park. Cover the entire rock with blue acrylic craft paint, allowing one side to dry before turning the rock over to paint the opposite side. Use a small paintbrush and green acrylic craft paint to decorate the rock with continents. Kids can use the painted rock as a paperweight on their desks.
