Strong parent-teacher relations are essential for a child's education.

Like any school, it is important for parents to connect with the people who teach their children at church. Arranging parent-teacher conferences can be dull, though. Spice it up with some exciting activities that will show off the different things the children are learning and even get the parents to participate.

  1. Child Presentations

    • Even if you tell parents what your children learned in Sunday School, it is more effective for the children to discuss what they learned. This way the parents are sure the children retained the information. Asking the children to make a short coloring book that describes their favorite classroom lesson shows the parents how well the children retained the knowledge and what it means to them. For example, it can be a story from the Bible that really touched the children or it can be another lesson they covered on how to be pious. Have the children show off their work during the meeting.

    Learning Station Tours

    • Children will feel excited about the opportunity to share their classroom with parents. Let the children lead their family through the different workstations they use every day. For example, if you have a block center, art center, library and fake house, let the children show off each section to their parents. Limit the time the students and parents can spend in each center, though, or not all of the parents will get a chance to cycle through the different centers.

    Welcome Wall

    • In the excitement of a parent-teacher conference, it is sometimes hard for everyone to get acquainted. Hang a welcome banner outside the church and invite parents to write their names next to a picture of their child. This associates the names with the child, giving you a better idea of who your guests are. The children can also decorate the banner, creating an interesting mural you can enjoy long after the parent-teacher conference.

    Sharing Bible Stories

    • Some of the things children learn in Sunday school can seem to have little bearing on their daily lives. Hearing parents tell stories about their favorite Bible scriptures can help kids understand the importance of the subject matter. Sit the children down and ask the parents to stand up one at a time and read a favorite passage from the Bible. Then have the parents explain why it is important and how it helps them be a better person.
