What Is Overstitching on a Quilt?
Quilting is a sewing project that combines different materials to produce a collage of swen pieces. Constructing a quilt is a project that a person can complete on her own or accomplish in a group format. If you're attempting to quilt, or considering joining a quilting group, familiarize yourself with quilt-specific techniques, such as overstitching. Overstitching is a commonly used technique within quilting.

Function
-
Overstitching is something that can be done by hand or by machine. The process of overstitching occurs after the quilt's squares have been assembled and constructed. When you overstitch you go over the quilt to create finer detail, such as outlines of animals, scenic pictures or words. Overstitching also applies to a technique used to secure the seam edges of the quilt to keep them from fraying.
Types
-
Two main types of overstitching stitches are used in quilting: the blanket stitch or the zig-zag stitch. These stitches are the stitches of choice because they provide a more secure stitch than other types, such as the straight stitch. Blanket stitches are effective for rounded edges, which is useful when overstitching a quilt. In addition, zig-zag stitches are desirable for reinforcing applique, which is common with quilting.

Process
-
An overstitch for a seam is started with a backstitch, before leading into the overstitch. Backstitching is used to secure the beginning of the overstitch so that it effectively and smoothly covers the seam that's being sewn. When using an overstitch to create patterns and designs in the quilt, it's unnecessary to begin the process with a backstitch. Rather, you can begin the blanket or zig-zag stitch on its own.
Considerations
-
If you're overstitching the edges of a large quilt, consider using a sewing machine for the overstitching. This saves time and effort from having to work around the circumference of the quilt by hand. If you're hosting a quilting circle with other members, however, divide the manual labor by assigning each person a side of the quilt to overstitch.
