Add a personal touch to a funeral with a handmade funeral program booklet.

Funerals are trying times when the family is under duress. They can also cost a fortune at a time when the family may have lost a breadwinner. To alleviate costs or to add a personal touch to the funeral program of a loved one, consider designing the program yourself.

  1. Design your Program

    • A funeral program informs mourners of the program of events for the funeral. Funeral programs can be found in abundance on the Internet. Your church or funeral parlor will also have several examples that you can look through for ideas. Download a template from the Internet or design a unique one in a word processing program.

    Contents

    • The inside facing page of the program should list the events, times and relevant venue. Outline the funeral proceedings and the times at which they will occur. If there is to be a ceremony at the cemetery, a memorial service or wake or refreshments at a location other than the primary venue, list addresses so that mourners can make their way from one venue to the next in a timely manner. Consider including a map on the back cover to help people navigate to the various locations. If hymns, songs or chants are to be performed at the ceremony, print the words in the program so that all the mourners will be able to participate. If you wish, you can include poems, sayings, scriptural exerts or dedications in the inside of program. The program may include an obituary and possibly photos for the mourners to treasure. The program may also include a note from the family thanking those who have attended the funeral and expressed their support and condolences.

    Design

    • The program cover may contain a graphic or photograph and the name of the deceased. Often the first page (inside left) has an obituary and picture of your loved one. The inside right page will have the funeral proceedings listed in order with relevant times and venues. The rest of the program will contain any songs, poems, dedications and other touching mementos you wish to include. If the family wishes flowers to be sent to another location other than the cemetery (often flowers are donated to hospitals and old age homes), this information should be written on the last page.

    Printing

    • Get someone to help you proofread the document to ensure that there are no errors or omissions. Ensure that you have enough ink in your printer to print the number of programs you will require. Print the cover pages first, then move onto the interior pages. You can assemble your program and secure it with two staples in the center. Alternatively, you can print your program on a single sheet and fold in in half or into three equal sections. For a more professional looking program, you can design the program and email it to a printer for printing on card sheets or glossy paper.
