Does Yahoo IM Work With AIM?
At the time of publication, the Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging application does not interface or work with any other instant-messaging client, including AOL Instant Messenger, also known as AIM. As with any IM client, you can only carry on an instant message conversation with users who use the same IM program you are using. There are other ways, however, for Yahoo! Messenger and AIM users to communicate.

Mobile Phones
-
Mobile phones equipped with multimedia or text messaging capability can exchange messages regardless of the maker or type of mobile phone being used. This means that if you have Yahoo! Messenger installed on your device and the friend with whom you wish to communicate has AIM, you can ignore the instant message route and send text messages back and forth instead. Like instant messages, text messages are limited in the amount of characters they will support in a single message. They will, however, automatically create additional messages should your characters exceed the limit for a single message.
Mobile Email
-
Many mobile devices come with push email, a feature that automatically delivers incoming email directly to the device without requiring you to log in and manually check for incoming messages. Push email is a viable option for carrying on a conversation if instant or mobile phone messaging is not an option. If you adjust your push email’s settings properly, the application will notify you when an incoming message has arrived. This process may take longer than other forms of text communication, but it will enable Yahoo! Messenger and AIM users to communicate.

Social Networking
-
Accessing a social networking website, such as Facebook, with your computer or mobile device gives you another option to communicate via instant messaging if you have Yahoo! Messenger and the person with whom you wish to communicate has AIM. Instant messaging is carried out in the same fashion as chatting. Access Facebook’s chat feature, which appears in the lower right hand corner of any Facebook page you visit while logged into your account. This feature works best on a personal computer because its spacious screen affords more room to view your conversation and is easier to type on than a mobile device.
Considerations
-
If you have Yahoo! Messenger and your contact only has AIM, consider downloading and installing AIM on your device or suggesting your contact do the same with Yahoo! Messenger. Both programs are available for and supported by most mobile devices and, because instant messaging with these clients is done online with a personal computer, are easily accessed with a laptop or desktop computer.
