How Good Is Defraggler?

Windows has a native defragmenter, a tool that restores free space by reuniting files and data that might be broken up in multiple places on your hard drive. Third-party software creator Piriform offers the free Defraggler, which you may find better suits your needs than the default Windows software.

  1. Defragmenting Files

    • Unlike the default Windows drefragmenter, for example, Defraggler allows you to choose files or directories to defragment. Thus, you can focus on large files that you may have recently modified or directories such as the "Program Files" folder, which may become more fragmented than other locations. Defraggler also lets you exclude files by name or type from the process. Selective defragmenting allows you to spend less time defragmenting by skipping unnecessary locations.

    Size and Speed

    • Piriform has aimed to create a program that is lightweight in both size and speed. The entire program has a size of about 3 megabytes -- or the size of an MP3 file. This helps reduce the time required to download it and, because Defraggler does not require a lot of memory, it does not cause your system to slowdown or lag. Because of this, Defraggler may be a better option if you have an older computer or one without a lot of memory or hard drive space.

    Free Space

    • The free space on your computer may not contain files but it does contain residual data from files that you have created, deleted or edited. While the Windows defragment tool will only defragment parts of your hard drive that contains files, Defraggler will also defragment this free space. This improves your operating system's performance when writing -- saving -- new files to your hard drive and reduces some possible future fragmentation.

    Miscellaneous

    • With Defraggler, you can defrag hard drive that are formatted with either NTFS or FAT32 file systems. In addition to this, Defraggler will display an interactive drive map that shows you just how fragmented your hard drive is and which files are the most fragmented. With this visual tool, you can then isolate one or more files for defragmenting.
