What Is the Salary of a Grade 10 Position for a State Job in Rhode Island?
State governments provide essential services to residents each year. These services are paid for with state tax money; in turn, this money also pays state residents to perform these jobs. In Rhode Island, state positions are divided into three categories, including classified positions, unclassified positions and non-classified positions. Classified positions can be competitive and non-competitive. Each category has different qualifications, but all government jobs fall within the salary grade pay scale.

Classified Competitive
-
Classified competitive positions in the Rhode Island state government are covered by civil service examinations. The applicants must meet certain educational requirements and have the proper experience. Once hired, they will fall under the government grade pay scale. The hourly pay range for a Grade 10 classified employee falls between $15.62 per hour and up to $16.14 per hour. Word processing typists in Rhode Island state government are an example of a grade 10 position that falls in this pay range.
Classified Noncompetitive
-
Classified noncompetitive positions are positions that require routine performance of custodial or laboring tasks under constant supervision. These positions may require certificates or registration. If they do, then current certificates or registration must be kept to keep the position. Union salaries for a grade 10 classified position run at $31,263, $31,768, $32,221, $32,683 and $33,440 per year. The lower end of the scale is for new employees, and the higher end is for more experienced grade 10 employees.

Unclassified
-
Unclassified state government positions in Rhode Island are set by Rhode Island General Law 36-4-2. Some positions are created by state departments established by statute. These positions include employees of elected officials or courts, as well as any positions that involve making state policy. An example of this would be a state trooper. Currently none of these positions fall within the grade 10 pay level for a Rhode Island state employee. This can change though, as these positions and pay grades are reevaluated each year.
Non-Classified
-
Non-classified state government positions are jobs covered by educational contracts through the Board of Governors for Higher Education and the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. These include positions in elementary, secondary and higher education in Rhode Island for faculty, as well as staff employees. The grade 10 employees in this classification continue to earn between $31,263 and $33,440 per year, based on their years of experience at this level.
