It's important to stay focused and ignore distractions while at work.

Distractions are everywhere, and this is especially true in the workplace. If you find yourself becoming disinterested while on the job, this may affect your productivity and, depending on the nature of your position, could also be hazardous. If you find yourself losing focus at work -- or worse, losing interest in your job entirely -- there are a number of strategies you can undertake to regain your focus and get to work.

  1. Time Management

    • Little tasks and chores throughout the day can easily pull your focus from your job and prevent you from getting work done. If this is the case, examine how you manage your time. For some people, putting together a to-do list each morning is helpful. Outline the specific goals you need to accomplish by the end of the day. If you work in an office, another big distraction can come in the form of emails; don't deal with email each time you receive an alert. Instead, schedule a regular time to go through email, perhaps once an hour. Doing so can improve your focus and your efficiency.

    If You Hate Your Job

    • If you find that you no longer enjoy your job, try to focus on the positive aspects of your job, pushing aside the parts of your job that you dislike. Make a list of what you do like about it. Another option is to speak with your boss or supervisor about undertaking new tasks or expanding your role; new challenges and fresh tasks may prevent you from become bored and could revive your interest in your job.

    Recapture Motivation

    • You may find it helpful to think back to when you first started at your current job. Recall the feelings you had about your job initially and think back to your motivation for taking the job, such as money, fulfillment, career advancement or some combination of these. Try to reconnect with the motivation you had when you began your job, with a goal of bringing your past motivation into the present to prevent you from becoming bored with your job.

    Eat, Drink and Exercise

    • There may be physical reasons why you're not interested at work. Even mild dehydration can make you feel sluggish, as can low blood sugar if you don't eat regularly. With this in mind, drink plenty of water throughout the day; it's a good idea to have a large water bottle nearby. In addition, keep snacking. Small, healthy snacks throughout the day -- such as a piece of fruit or a container of yogurt -- will keep your blood sugar from plunging and keep your mind sharp, which can help prevent you from losing interest at work. Another action you can take is exercising, which will cause your body to produce mood-improving endorphins. Not only will exercise make you feel better about yourself, but you can transfer this positive attitude to the workplace and renew your interest in your job.
