A reprimanding boss can make it hard to perform your job to the best of your abilities.

Having to deal with a reprimanding boss is never an easy task, even for people with the thickest of skins. However, just because your boss is in a position of authority doesn't mean that you need to accept being treated in a condescending manner. It's important to learn to tell the difference between justified and unjustified reprimands. Sometimes, you may be able to effectively address the situation directly with your boss. Other times, you may have to grin and bear it or turn to alternative resources to help you handle the situation.

  1. Self-Reflection

    • Having the ability to examine and reflect on your own behavior can go a long way toward helping you deal with a reprimanding boss. Talk the situation over with a trusted friend or family member to gain insight into your own behavior as well as your boss's. If possible, consult your company's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides confidential counseling and advice to employees in medium to large-sized companies. See if the reprimands may have some justification. Be willing to accept your part in the situation if, for example, you've been consistently showing up late to work or taking longer lunch breaks than are allowed.

    Talking to Your Boss

    • Sometimes, talking to your boss about the reprimand can clear the air while giving you suggestions for avoiding future reprimands. Ask your boss for advice on how to improve your behavior or the overall situation, if you feel that it's appropriate. Showing an interest in developing your work habits and being willing to remedy the situation that caused the reprimand can demonstrate initiative and conscientiousness and let your boss know that you care about your job and the company. Try not to be emotional or confrontational. Use "I" statements to convey your message and intention. Instead of saying, " You're wrong about this reprimand," ask for further clarification regarding your boss's expectations and how you can improve your work.

    Verbally Abusive or Irrational Behavior

    • Although your boss is in a position of authority, you do not have to tolerate abusive behavior. If your boss is giving you unjustified reprimands, harassing you or being abusive, contact your union representative, EAP or company mediator. You may be advised to go a step above your boss and talk to your boss's supervisor about the situation. Document all the discussions you've had with your boss so that you can provide proof of your conversations if needed.

    Stress Management

    • Dealing with a reprimanding boss can be extremely stressful. It's important to have an effective way to de-stress and relax at the end of the day. Although it's not always easy, try to leave work at work. Worrying about the situation and losing sleep over it won't change anything. In fact, if you're able to get some rest and relaxation, you may be able to handle the situation more effectively. Sometimes, the best solutions come unexpectedly after a good night's sleep.
