Pearls and Pink Ribbon
-
A four-layer bright white fondant wedding cake with strings of pearls strung around each tier is topped off with a Cartier diamond in a velvet box. This classic engagement cake can be slightly modified to work as a traditional wedding cake, with the addition of a vintage bride and groom. The white pearls bring back the simple elegance of the 50's and glamor of leading ladies of that era. The pearls gather together every four inches in a simple design. The simplicity of the cake, with four modest tiers, white icing and white pearls, includes a single pink ribbon on the bottom and top platforms. The pink ribbon around a slightly raised top platform creates a stage for the boxed ring or traditional bride and groom. Alternatively, use a blue or yellow ribbon to match the wedding colors.
Glass Cake Stand
-
Design a traditional three-tier wedding cake to be displayed on a glass cake stand, that would have been used on special occasions in households across America and Great Britain during the 50's. The tiers should be larger in diameter and shorter in height, than contemporary wedding cake tiers that stack up high. An ivory traditional butter cream frosting, with imprinted ivory flowers can be enhanced with pearl candies. Top the cake off with a vintage bride and groom standing under a floral ivory arch. A similar grooms cake can be made in chocolate and also placed on a cake pedal-stool.

Black and White with Hot Pink
-
A 50's style art deco cake in a black-and-white design can use a touch of hot pink. The three tiers can all be the same size and base color, placed on three different platforms. Each platform should hold the cake tier at different levels. The cakes can be in white-and-black fondant, with a white base and black polka-dots, a black base and white stripes or half white and half black with opposite designs. Add hot pink bows, ribbons or flowers as an accent. The bride and groom can be hand-crafted rather than traditional figurines. Use a black or white staircase to connect all three tiers.
50's Inspirations
-
Be inspired by the wedding cakes that were created in the 50's for inspirational couples and glamorous brides. Research the cake designs that were chosen by Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy and have a replica cake made from the same recipe for your wedding. Find out who made their cake toppers, as well. For the groom's cake, consider a 50's model car design or a popular TV show or series. A cake the shape of a record with your wedding song on the label can be fun or consider individual cakes in the size of a 45, for guests to take home. Use Tupperware or tin foil to send home cake. You can also stack up a cake plate with individually wrapped ding-dongs.
