Pinning corsages is a rite of passage for teens before prom.

A corsage is a small arrangement of flowers that girls wear for special occasions such as weddings or dances. Some corsages wrap around the lady's wrist, while others are pinned onto her dress. Corsages are available at most floral shops and placed in a box for preservation. Before giving the corsage to their dates, men must keep the flowers refrigerated until it is time to take the flowers out of the box.

  1. Weddings

    • At weddings, some female guests traditionally wear corsages. Often, the mother and grandmother of the bride and groom receive the honor of wearing corsages. The history of wedding corsages, or flowers in a wedding ceremony, dates back to the ancient Greek culture, which believed certain flowers warded off evil spirits. The bride and her companions (modern-day bridesmaids) pinned flowers onto their garments as an extra measure of spiritual protection. In modern weddings, other guests who might wear corsages include other relatives, such as the godmothers of the bride and groom.

    High School Dances

    • Teen girls often wear corsages at high school dances, including homecoming and proms. Before attending high school dances, it is customary for the girls' dates to pin the corsages to the girls' dresses. If the date brings a wrist corsage, the date slides the corsage onto the girl's wrist. All girls attending a high school might go to the homecoming dance, but prom dances are usually reserved for girls in the 11th and 12th grades. Girls in ninth and 10th grades might be able to go to prom if their dates are upperclassmen.

    Mother's Day

    • Mother's Day is an American-born tradition of setting a day aside to honor mothers. Julia Ward Howe, a 19th century American author, called for such a holiday due to her belief that it was a woman's duty to help shape society. Howe made these comments in the bloody aftermath of the American Civil War. Since that time, nations throughout the world adopted the Mother's Day concept. A mother's husband or her children have the opportunity to honor her by presenting her with a corsage. The mother wears this corsage as she and her family go to a brunch or dinner that Sunday. Mother's Day is always held on Sundays, so the mother might also wear her corsage to church if she follows the Christian faith.

    Anniversaries

    • Because corsages play an important role in weddings, a husband can help his bride re-live her day of matrimony by giving her a corsage for anniversaries. Guests who wore corsages at the wedding obviously do not have to wear corsages on a couple's anniversary. Wives might wear their corsages to dinner or wherever she and her husband go for their anniversary. However, some couples host another wedding ceremony on a particular anniversary to renew vows, where guests are welcome to wear corsages once again. Couples usually reserve having another wedding ceremony for special anniversaries, such as the 25th or 50th.
