Power inverters are a portable means of providing electrical power to devices that normally use power from an electrical outlet. These devices are used to convert direct current electrical power into alternating current electrical power. Many power inverters utilize a 12-volt DC power source, such as an automobile battery; however, some power inverters require a 24-volt DC power source. Powering such an inverter requires wiring two automotive batteries in series to make the inverter electrical circuit work.

Items you will need

  • Two 12V automotive batteries

  • One automotive battery cable

  • One 24V power inverter with electrical clamp input terminals

  • Small crescent wrench

Step 1

Loosen the battery cable terminal clamp screws. Install one end of the battery cable to the negative battery post on the first battery. Install the other end of the battery cable to the positive battery post on the second battery. Tighten the battery cable terminal clamp screws.

Step 2

To connect the inverter to the batteries, attach the positive (red) inverter electrical clamp connection to the positive (+) terminal on the first battery. Attach the negative (black) inverter electrical clamp connection to the negative (-) terminal on the second battery.

Step 3

Turn on the power inverter, and allow it to charge up for about three seconds. Plug an electrical device (such as a fan, radio, etc.) into one of the inverter electrical outlets, and turn the electrical device on.
