You can be patriotic without fireworks and parades.

Patriotism is a beneficial practice for all Americans. It promotes unity, solidarity and a dedication to your country's common goals. It increases morale and generates pride in your citizenship. With this in mind, school is an effective venue for showing patriotism. As an educator, you have many ways in which you can emphasize patriotism among your students. In turn, it will foster their own pride in being an American citizen.

  1. Learning Activities

    • Since school is a place for learning, there is no better location to be patriotic while educating yourself in the process. There were many key figures in American history who laid the foundation of the United States. Assemble your class into groups and assign each student a project about a specific historical figure, such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson. Ask each group to come up with five key facts about the figure's life. Another option is to focus on patriotic documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights or the American Constitution. Give the students a few days to familiarize themselves with their favorite passages or laws. Later, allot them a few minutes to explain what they like about these excerpts or laws.

    Military Support

    • It is no secret that America has seen conflict, both past and present, that left its mark on the country. With this in mind, encourage your students to find a friend or family member who is or was serving in the military. For example, some may have a grandfather who stormed the beaches of Normandy or a parent who spent tours in Afghanistan. Devote a class to for the guests to tell your students about their experiences and how it strengthened their patriotism. Give the students a chance to answer questions, and provide the veteran a token of appreciation, such as a class-made banner or card.

    Politics

    • Democracy is a signature of the American people. Show your patriotism by fostering interest in the process and talking about politics in class. If you really want to create enthusiasm, arrange a class debate about America's politicians, such as presidential candidates and senators. Provide the class with a few key issues, such as the economy, health care or military efforts. Explain to them where each party stands and allow them to take sides in accordance with their personal views. This will serve as a reminder of free speech and the many other components that define America.

    Events

    • Speak with the principal and your fellow teachers to arrange a memorial activity for the September 11 attacks -- for instance, by gathering students outside for a moment of silence or to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. If you're teaching summer school, you can ask your students to dress in red, white and blue the day before the Fourth of July holiday. On inauguration day or on election days, encourage your students to wear American flag pins or pins of other notable symbols, like the Statue of Liberty. You can even offer prizes as an incentive for categories like creativity and style.
