Connection Information to Install Themes in WordPress

To install premium WordPress themes you need to connect to your website and upload the files. The usual way to connect to the site is with an FTP client. You need a user name and password to connect to your WordPress site via FTP.

  1. What Are WordPress Themes?

    • Themes are a way to redesign the look and functionality of your WordPress blog. Different themes do different things. While some only change the way the site looks to visitors, other themes change the way you interact with and create posts. Developers have made thousands of WordPress themes available. Some are free and others require a fee.

    Connect to Your WordPress Site

    • When you open your FTP client, you need to enter three pieces of information to connect to your site. First, you need the domain name, which is the URL of your WordPress home page. You also need your user name and password for your hosting account. This is not the user name and password you use to access the WordPress administrative control panel. It is the information you use to connect to your hosting provider.

    Forgot User Name and Password

    • If you forgot your user name and password with your hosting account, you have two options to retrieve it. First, look through your old emails. When you initially signed-up for your account, your host sent you the information. If you no longer have the email, then your only option is to contact your hosting provider. Even though you cannot log in to its site, your provider will have procedures for sending your user name and password to the email address you used to sign up for the account.

    Install the Theme

    • Once you have established an FTP connection to your WordPress site, install the theme files in the WordPress "theme" folder. If you don't yet have a "theme" folder, you can create one with most FTP clients in the same way you create new folders in Windows. To make the theme active, log in to your WordPress administrative panel. Click "Appearance" and "Theme." Click the name of the theme and click "Activate."
