Traditionally, bridal showers only included women.

Traditionally wedding showers consist of a group of women who bring household gifts to a party at someone's home or catering establishment, dine on trays of fruit and finger sandwiches and sip fruit punch. Many modern shower themes have changed to include couples and other male friends of the prospective bride and groom.

  1. Wine and Cheese Party

    • An excellent way to stock an engaged couple's wine cellar is to have a wine and cheese party. Guests are encouraged to bring gifts of their favorites wines and wine accessories to the shower. Food and drinks at the party would include various cheeses, crackers, light hors d'oeuvres, fruit and, of course, a variety of wines. Gifts could include wine buckets, openers, wine reference books and bottles of reds, whites, champagnes and zinfandels.

    Backyard Barbeque

    • A backyard BBQ is another unique coed shower theme for a lucky couple. Great gifts would include BBQ utensils, outdoor lighting, lawn furniture, outdoor games and BBQ cookbooks. Foods that could be served include hamburgers, hot dogs, brisket and steak along with potato salad, coleslaw, watermelon, cookies and cobbler. A keg of beer and pitchers of ice cold lemonade and tea are perfect accompaniments to the party.

    Sunday Brunch

    • With so many couples with tight schedules and small children, sometimes evenings are a difficult time frame to attend events. A Sunday brunch shower may be the perfect solution. Appropriate gifts include an electric grill, mixer, blender, waffle iron or juicer. Breakfast fare is inexpensive, easy to make and could include eggs, waffles, sausage, breakfast potatoes, ham, juices and coffee. Mimosas, champagne cocktails and Bloody Marys are the perfect midday cocktails to serve.

    Pajama Party

    • Invite adult-only guests to appear at the shower in their pajamas and bring gifts pertaining to a bedroom atmosphere. Suggested gift items would include silk sheets, matching robes, massage oils, lingerie, scented candles, throw pillows or intimate books and movies. Party fare could consist of heavy hors d'oeuvres, after dinner liqueurs and dessert wines.

    Movie Night

    • If the bride and groom love to attend movies or are film buffs, arrange a movie night shower to help the bride and groom begin their own film library. All guests bring copies of their favorite movies or movie memorabilia. Snacks would include boxes of movie candies, popcorn, hot dogs with condiments and various flavors of soda. Arrange for guests to view a romantic, wedding-themed movie and rent a popcorn machine for extra impact.
