Hairstylists must be licensed to cut hair.

All states require a license to work as a barber, hairstylist or cosmetologist, but the requirements to qualify for licensure can vary by state, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. States require licensure for hairstylists and other personal care workers to ensure the worker has knowledge of sanitation and safety practices when providing services to the public.

  1. Cosmetology License

    • A cosmetology license is a requirement for cosmetologists who provide a wide range of beauty services to male and female clients. Hairstylists and cosmetologists provide beauty services such as hair coloring, styling, cutting and deep conditioning treatments for hair. In addition, a licensed cosmetologist can provide services such as manicures, pedicures, facials and makeup application.

    Barber License

    • A barber license may limit the services a hairstylist can provide to clients. BLS reports that men are the primary clients for barbers, who provide shampooing, cutting and styling services. In addition, a barber may provide shaving and skin care services in some states. States may also license barbers to highlight and color hair.

    Training Hours

    • State boards of cosmetology require applicants for a license to style hair as a cosmetologist or barber to complete an approved training program. The program must provide the student with a specific number of training hours to meet licensure requirements. For example, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation requires an education program consisting of 1,200 training hours to qualify to sit for the barber and cosmetologist examination. New Hampshire requires an 800-hour training program for barbers and a 1,500-hour program for cosmetologists.

    Examinations

    • License candidates must pass an examination that tests their knowledge of hairstyling and cosmetology practices. State tests consist of a written examination that requires knowledge of sanitation and safety practices, scalp disorders and diseases, state laws and ethics for hairstylists. Students pursuing a cosmetology license must have knowledge of skin disorders and diseases, treatments, nail disorders and client services. The practical portion of the examination requires candidates to demonstrate safe and sanitary practices and proficiency in providing hairstyling services to clients.

    License Renewal

    • State boards require a hairstylist, barber or cosmetologist maintain the license to continue providing services to clients. In many cases, the hairstylist must pay a fee to the state cosmetology board to renew the state license.
