Use an armoire to contain your tot's belongings.

For many parents, finding enough space to stow their kids belongings proves a difficult task. Add to the storage space in your child’s room by placing a sizable armoire in the space. Before putting this furniture piece in your child’s room, however, customize it with paint to make it more attractive and kid-friendly. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Primary Hues

    • If your child’s room features an assortment of bold hues, paint your armoire in a bold, color-block style. Purchase small cans of paint in various primary hues. Use tape to divide up your armoire doors into blocks of color, or paint each door one hue entirely and the body another. This painting option is ideal if your child’s room features these vivid colors prominently, as adding them to your armoire will make it better fit with the bright hues found around the space.

    Detailed Painting

    • Transform a bland armoire into a more engaging piece fit for a child by adding some detail painting. Using a fine brush and paint, add decorative painting to the armoire front that fits with the theme of your child’s room. For example, if you intend to add this armoire to a princess room, paint a crown prominently on the armoire front in colors that fit the rest of the decor. If, on the other hand, the armoire is in a jungle-themed room, paint some vines or even a monkey on your armoire. If you possess a steady hand with the paintbrush, add these decorations freehand. If not, use stencils to add these details and customize your piece.

    Personalized Painting

    • Make your armoire uniquely your child’s by adding his name to the armoire front. Paint these letters freehand, or use a stencil to create uniform-sized letters. Make the letters all one hue, or use multiple colors featured in your child’s room.

    Labeled Compartments

    • Make your child’s armoire more user friendly by labeling the compartments to indicate the components that each will hold. For example, if the armoire features a large drawer in which you will house sweaters, label it as such. For a more whimsical option, label with playful phrases, such as “Rockin' Wear” for the compartment in which you will place your daughter's rock star-themed dress-up play clothes or “Wash Me Please” for the side on which you will store your tot’s laundry hamper.

    Child Decorated Armoire

    • Instead of taking on the task of painting your child's armoire, allow your creative kid to do it. Prep the surface by painting the armoire a solid hue, or allow your child to paint directly on the wood. Give your kiddo a selection of colors that fits with his room decor and encourage him to make the armoire his own, painting a scene on the surface or simply adding colored geometric shapes. Periodically, pull out the paints again and allow your child to add to this armoire, modify it to fit his changing aesthetic. If the layers of paint build up too much, sand them away and allow your child to start anew with his armoire decorating efforts.
