Jell-O Mold Ideas

There are few limitations on how you can mold Jell-O.

Jell-O not only comes in lots of different flavors and has the amazing ability to retain many shapes, but also allows you to add fruit and other objects inside. This greatly expands the potential of the Jell-O mold, allowing you to create molds that have certain themes. Jell-O is a gelatin, which is a hydrolyzed form of collagen. Collagen has molecular bonds that can be broken down and rearranged. The gelatin gel can only remain in the state its most known for when it is kept at around 4 degrees Celsius. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Eggs

    • Make Jell-O eggs for Easter. The Jell-O eggs can be made in different colors so they have the diversity of color often found during Easter. Shredded coconut can decorate the Jell-O plate, especially if you add Easter-colored food dye to the coconut. Mix other candies in with the Jell-O eggs, such as jellybeans.

    Shapes

    • You can cut Jell-O into an innumerable number of shapes. Consider creating Jell-O in a pan and using molds shaped like holiday-themed shapes to cut out these shapes. You can make these shapes whenever you want to add variety to life, since the molds are reusable.

    Large Molds

    • Try creating larger Jell-O molds. If you're worried about the mold collapsing, increase the ratio of gelatin to liquid to create a firmer consistency will stand up. Once you are confident with your ability to create larger molds, create Jell-O layers. Chill each layer until it is set. Then add another layer. The layer should be cooled to the point where it is slightly thickened -- too thick and the next layer will slide off -- not thick enough and the different layers will merge. When adding different layers, consider changing the Jell-O color of each layer.

    Internal Designs

    • You can add designs into the Jell-O mold. Chill one layer of the Jell-O. Then, chill another layer partially, with the layer remaining thin enough for fruit or other things to be set into the Jell-O. Chill that layer until it has set. Then, pour another layer on top of it. Add something to the mold that has a certain theme. For example, add gummy worms to a mold that is dyed brownish by food coloring to have the Jell-O mold simulate worms within the ground.

    Halloween Themes

    • The jiggling that Jell-O does can be harnessed into something that is terrifying and suitable for Halloween. By using a mold shaped like a brain, you can create a Jell-O mold that looks like a jiggling cerebrum. Add blood-red dyes to the Jell-O making it even more gruesome. Get a toy scalpel and place it inside the brain, making it look like a brain surgery gone awry. Molds exist for most other body parts, including severed hands, eyeballs and a human heart.
