Catholic Crafts for the First Communion

First communion is a significant event in the Catholic faith.

First communion is an important milestone in Catholicism. To emphasize the significance of first communion to children about to receive it, consider having them complete several relevant crafts in advance. When selecting a craft, it is important to consider the ages and and abilities of the children who will be completing them. Most children receive their first communion around age 7.

  1. Photo Frame

    • Purchase some simple picture frames and allow children to decorate them with paint, glitter and any other art supplies you see fit. Explain that they should decorate their frames carefully because a picture of them at their first communion will be put inside the frame they paint. After first communion, display the pictures.

    Communion Collage

    • Allow the children to paint or draw a collage on a large piece of paper. Instruct them to draw something that represents first communion. They can use words or images. If they have a difficult time coming up with an idea, tell them to draw a picture of themselves receiving communion and to write a few words about what it will be like.

    Scrapbook

    • Have each child prepare a scrapbook of their first communion, into which they can put photos or cards. Tell them they can use whatever art supplies they like to decorate their scrapbook. As they make their scrapbooks, talk with them about why their first communion will be significant.

    Bookmark

    • Cut a small piece of cardboard and give one to each child. Explain that they are going to make their own bookmarks. Ask them to write something on the bookmark about how they feel about first communion. Have them decorate the bookmark any way they want. Tell them to keep the bookmark in their Bible as a reminder of what communion means to them.
