Can You Sync Gmail & Ymail?

You can sync the same email messages across your Gmail and Yahoo! Mail accounts, including sent messages, using the IMAP email protocol. With the correct settings in place, marking an email as read in Gmail will automatically mark it as read in Yahoo! Mail, and vice versa.

  1. IMAP

    • When you check an email account from a second location, such as checking your Yahoo! Mail account from your iPhone or Gmail, you use one of two protocols: POP or IMAP. When you use POP, mail downloaded to one location moves from the original server to the second location. A message can only be in one place at one time. In order to sync email across accounts, use IMAP, which keeps all messages and message statuses on the server no matter how many programs or devices you use to access those messages. If you delete a message in one place, you remove it from all programs and devices. Similarly, if you read a message in one place, the message shows as read everywhere else.

    Account Order

    • You can check external POP and IMAP accounts from Gmail, but you cannot check external accounts from Yahoo! Mail at time of publication. This means you must create your original email account in Yahoo! Mail first, and then set up Gmail to check that account using IMAP.

    Yahoo! Mail Settings

    • You must have Yahoo! Mail Plus in order to check your Yahoo! Mail account from Gmail. At time of publication, this costs $19.99 per year. To upgrade, sign in to your Yahoo! Mail account at mail.yahoo.com. Click "Options" then "POP & Forwarding." Click the link to upgrade your mail account.

    Gmail Settings

    • To load your Yahoo! Mail account into Gmail and sync both accounts, sign in to your Gmail account at gmail.com. Click the gear icon in the top right corner. Choose "Mail Settings." Click "Accounts and Import." Click "Add Email Account." Enter your Yahoo! email address and click "Next Step." Type your full email address in the "Username" box and your Yahoo! password in the "Password" box. Enter "imap.mail.yahoo.com" as the server. Select "993" as the port. Check "Always use a secure connection." Click "Add Account."
