Skype on a Mac Cannot See the Webcam

Whether you're using a built-in or an external webcam, video chatting with family and friends is one of the highlights in Skype. Occasionally, the program might not recognize the webcam. Connection problems can vary with different users and webcams, but some troubleshooting tips and guidelines may help solve the problems.

  1. System Requirements

    • Although many webcams are compatible with Mac OS X operating systems, your computer might not recognize your webcam it if it doesn't meet the device's system requirements. Most Mac notebooks today come with built-in webcams; however, older notebooks and desktops can only use external webcams. Before connecting them to your Mac, check the minimum system requirements on the packing. Common system requirements may include a minimum processor speed, a certain amount of free disk space and a specific operating system. If your Mac doesn't meet your external webcam's requirements, not only may it fail to work, Skype will have a difficult time recognizing it. In addition, if your webcam comes with an installation disc, it is necessary to install the drivers or software.

    Software Conflicts

    • Whether you're using a built-in or external webcam, only one program can use the webcam at a time. Programs that use webcams include video-editing software, instant messaging programs, and video sharing and social networking sites. Skype cannot share webcam connections with another program. If any of these programs are using the webcam, closing them may solve the connection problem.

    Call Settings

    • Even with a built-in webcam, it's possible to connect external webcams to the Mac. Often, people connect additional webcams if they include features and settings they like, or if they support high-definition video. Before making a call, check the call settings and make sure the webcam you want to use is selected in the video settings section. If you see a red or yellow icon in the calling area, additional setup and configuration may be required to optimize the webcam to achieve the best visual quality. Clicking any of the icons automatically directs you to the video settings and configuration section where you can adjust the settings accordingly.

    Tips

    • If you are still having trouble with your webcam, Skype recommends that you contact the manufacturer directly. The problem might be with the webcam and not the computer or Skype itself. You can identify a webcam problem by trying different webcams. If a newly connected webcam works, the old one is probably faulty. If neither works, installing the latest Mac OS X updates using the Software Update tool may prove helpful in solving connection problems.
