There are several ways to include hand-sewn beads in a project.

Adding beads to a sewing project is an ideal way to put some flair into the craft. If you're new to the art of hand-sewn beading, there are several strategies you can utilize to make the process simpler. Understanding how to best sew the beads on will ensure your project looks clean and professional.

  1. Individual

    • For a detailed look, sew each bead one at a time on to your fabric project. Use a piece of thread about 1 foot long with your needle, and run a few stitches through each bead, connecting it to the fabric. Then, tie off the stitch and trim away the excess. Repeat this to add as many beads as you like.

    Chalking

    • If you want to make a pattern using the beads and want to make it exact, use a bit of chalk. You can draw small dots onto the fabric letting you know where each bead should be placed. Then sew each bead in place. Brush off the chalk markings when you're finished.

    Stringing

    • Instead of sewing each bead down one at a time, use a stringing technique. Sew a knotted piece of thread through the back of the fabric, then string some beads on to the thread sticking above the material. Point the needle back to the back side of the fabric and pull through, making a string of beads along the cloth.

    Glue

    • Once you've finished whatever beading technique you've chosen, you may want to reinforce the beading. Use a dab of fabric glue behind each bead to help hold it in place. This will protect the beads from pulling off the fabric. Make sure to let the glue dry fully.
