Can an Alternative Down Comforter Be Washed in a Washing Machine?

With the proper care and cleaning, down comforters will last for many years.

Alternative down comforters forgo the feathers and instead use synthetic material such as polyester or wool, which provide a hypoallergenic option not available with real down. However, no matter what material fills the comforter, you can wash it in the washing machine if you do so carefully.

Washing Machine

Most alternative down comforters are machine-washable. However, the comforter's large bulky size typically makes it too big to fit in a standard washer. Trying to launder it in a normal washing machine will overload the washer, causing more harm than good. Instead, either spot clean the alternative down comforter or launder it in a commercial washing machine. Commercial washing machines are available at laundromats. When laundering the down comforter, refrain from using typical laundry detergent and opt for detergent designed for use on down products or 1 teaspoon of gentle dish soap.

Spot Cleaning

If the alternative down comforter is not too dingy, spot clean the blanket to remove any stains or discolorations. Spot cleaning will help keep the comforter looking its best without requiring you to drag the bulky item to and from a laundromat. To spot clean the comforter, apply several drops of a stain remover to a white cloth and gently rub the discoloration or stain. If possible, gently push the filling away from the area you are spot cleaning. After you have removed the stain, blot the comforter with a cold, damp cloth to get rid of the stain remover. To dry the area, use a hair dryer set on low heat.

Drying

After laundering the alternative bedding, dry it thoroughly to prevent mold and mildew growth. However, typical dryers are not large enough to hold the comforter. Instead, you must use a commercial dryer like those found in laundromats. Refrain from using high heat when drying the down comforter as it will scorch and damage the down. When drying, use a low heat setting and dry for multiple cycles. After each cycle, remove the comforter and shake it thoroughly before placing it back into the dryer.

Considerations

Always read and follow the care and washing instructions printed on the comforter’s label. These directions are the manufacturer-recommended cleaning instructions.

Refrain from dry cleaning the comforter unless the care and cleaning label states otherwise.

Launder the alternative down comforter once or twice a year to keep the bedding looking its best.
