Trouble Posting on Craigslist

When you submit a classified advertisement to a newspaper, magazine or trade journal, things can go wrong, including a misprinted ad or an administrative conflict that results in your ad failing to be published. When you post a classified advertisement online with the website Craigslist, there are also ways you can run into trouble, and some of these roadblocks are of the digital variety.

  1. About Craigslist

    • Craigslist is a website that hosts a variety of free advertisements in many categories. These advertisements are grouped by city, meaning there are separate Craigslist pages for New York City and for Los Angeles. You can post ads pertaining to everything from job solicitations and offers to items wanted or for sale; you can even advertise an event and meeting. When you create these ads, you have to go through a post publication process, which includes filling out the form for your ad in full and clicking confirmation links sent to the email address you provide.

    Post Creation

    • When you create a classified ad on Craigslist, you must fill out a form. This form differs depending on the type of advertisement you are posting. However, you must always provide an email address and verify that email address to post your ad. Take care to double-check the address you typed in; Craigslist will not notify you if it sends the confirmation link to the wrong address. Make sure every box with a title written in green text is filled in; these likely include your email address, a title for the post and compensation information. Other boxes in black, such as the "Specific Location" box, are optional.

    Before Going Live

    • As part of the classified post creation process, Craigslist sends those who submit a completed post successfully a confirmation email. The link in this email leads to another link to publish the post; you must click through both to publish your Craigslist ad. Problems in this process may include not receiving this email. According to Craigslist, there may be a delay, sometimes of several hours, between when you submit the ad and when you receive the email, depending on your Internet service provider. If you don't receive the confirmation message, you should check the section of your email client that stores spam email, because some filters automatically send Craigslist emails to the spam folder.

    After Confirmation

    • After you click the confirmation email links, Craigslist notifies you that your post has been published. But if you search for your post on the site, you may not be able to find it. This can signify a number of things. If you search for the post 30 to 45 days after it was published (or 7 days in some cities), it may have expired. Craigslist may also remove your post if it believes the post is spam. Other Craigslist users may also flag your post for removal based on a number of factors, including containing offensive content, violating Craigslist's terms of use or being posted too frequently within a short span of time. You should verify your posts are online, because Craigslist provides no notification if your post has been removed; you need to check for yourself.
