The Recommended Detergent for a Miele Dishwasher

Use your favorite type of automatic dishwasher detergent in a Miele dishwasher, or purchase Miele brand detergents from the company online.

The Recommended Detergent for a Miele Dishwasher

Miele dishwashers, like other domestic dishwashers, can use standard dishwashing detergents designed specifically for automatic dishwashers. Each Miele dishwasher has detergent and rinse-aid dispensers; some models also have a salt container to soften water, which is more common in European models. Follow directions on automatic dishwashing detergent packages to determine how much detergent to use with each load. The owner's manual for each Miele dishwasher also makes it own recommendations for specific types of loads, such as glassware.

Detergent Types

Miele recommends filling the dishwasher with powder, gel or tab detergents designed for dishwashers. Read the product directions for the amount of detergent to be used in the dishwasher, but don't use any other type of detergent than those specifically formulated for automatic dishwashers. Miele does not recommend the use of tab-style detergent for the “Express” wash cycle. In addition, the amount of detergent should be reduced by half when using a “China & Crystal” wash cycle. Check the dishwasher owner's manual for recommended detergent amounts for specific load types, as these vary.

Miele-Brand Detergents

The Miele Company manufactures its own line of dishwasher cleaning products, including detergent and rinse aid, and recommends the use of these products with the Miele dishwasher. These items are available for sale through Miele's website and in many home appliance stores, especially those that carry Miele appliances.

Rinse Aid

Miele recommends the use of rinse aid detergent for every wash load to prevent spots from appearing on dishes and glasses. Pour liquid rinse aid detergent into the dispenser until it's full and press the lid shut until the lid clicks. Wipe up any rinse aid detergent spills, as these can create over-sudsing during the wash cycle, which could cause the dishwasher to leak.

Dishwasher Salt

For Miele dishwashers with a built-in water softener, Miele recommends the use of water softener salt, especially in areas with hard water. Hard water leaves mineral residue that results in spots on glassware. Check with your local water company to find out if the home has hard water. If the water company recommends water softener salt, run the dishwasher with 2 quarts of water in the salt container before filling the container with salt to prep the container for future salt usage. Fill the salt container with water softener salt specifically made for dishwashers. Close the compartment lid and the dishwasher door, then run a “Rinse & Hold” cycle without dishes in the dishwasher.
