Skype Keeps Closing Unexpectedly
Skype allows you to chat with family and friends using video calls; however, the program isn't as effective if it keeps crashing and closing unexpectedly. There are a variety of problems that may cause Skype to crash frequently. Understanding the cause of these issues allows you to solve the problem safely.

System Compatibility
-
System incompatibility is one of the major problems that can cause Skype to freeze or crash frequently. It isn't enough that Skype can run on both Windows and Mac OSX operating systems, it must meet the minimum CPU speed and memory requirements to function optimally. A minimum processor speed of 1GHz and at least 512 MB of memory are required to run the program; however, higher numbers may improve performance drastically, especially if you want to video chat with one or more people. Running a fast network connection with a minimum speed of at least 128Kbps can also improve performance; however, speeds of at least 1.2Mbps is more ideal for streaming video.
System and Software Updates
-
Whether you're using Windows or Mac OSX operating systems, installing the latest drivers, system updates and service packs can improve Skype's performance. If you're using an external webcam, you can install the latest sound and video drivers from the manufacturer's website. Installing the latest version of Skype may also solve problems related to freezing and crashing. If you're unsure what version you're using, check the "About Skype" section in the program's help menu. If Skype is damaged or missing vital files, uninstalling and reinstalling it can repair damaged files. If you're using a Windows operating system, key software such as Microsoft DirectX should also be updated when necessary.

System Problems

A firewall prevents unauthorized programs from accessing system components and connecting to the Internet. Some firewalls will not permit Skype to connect to the Internet. If you're firewall is up and running, adding Skype to the list of approved programs may prevent it from crashing constantly. Adding Skype to an approved list may vary with different firewalls, so always refer to your program's documentation. Manually editing your computer and deleting vital system components such as those found in the Windows Registry may cause Skype to crash. If you've made some drastic changes to your computer, undo them. If you're not experienced in computer troubleshooting, its probably not a good idea to modify or delete components you're not familiar with.
Compatibility Mode
-
Running Skype in compatibility mode will cause Skype to crash. This setting is only available on Windows operating systems. If you've ever set Skype in compatibility mode, this setting will remain unchanged even if you uninstall or install a new version of the program. If Skype is in compatibility mode, locating the Skype.exe file, and disabling this feature in the program's properties will improve your program's performance.
