Minimum Internet Speed for Online Console Gaming
From the Xbox 360 to the PlayStation 3, you not only can play video games but also play against other players via the Internet using the console's built-in online component. The minimum Internet speed you want for online console gaming is 8 megabits per second (Mbps). Using an Internet connection slower than 8 Mbps results in a delay in the online game loading and overall game operation.

Incompatible Connections
-
You cannot use a dial-up Internet connection to access online games via your console. Accessing the Internet with a connection speed in the 1 to 6 Mbps range is also too slow for online console gaming. The games will not load and you will receive one or more connection errors. With these types of connections, you are limited to non-online games.
Delay
-
You will experience a delay in online game loading if using a 7 Mbps Internet connection. The online game may pause multiple times and you may receive one or more connection errors. You will also experience characters in the game not moving quickly and a slowing in the game’s overall response time when using the console's controllers.

Upgrading
-
Consider upgrading your Internet service or speed package if your connection is currently dial-up or has a speed rating lower than 8 Mbps. Once the upgrade is complete, you will be able to play games online using your gaming console. The higher the Mbps rating, the better.
Using Digital Subscriber Line
-
You can also use an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) 2+ broadband Internet connection to access online console gaming. The connection still needs to have a speed rating of 8 Mbps or higher to keep from experiencing problems with playing online console games. You will experience a delay if using a regular ADSL Internet connection while loading and playing some games.
