Copic Marker Techniques

The manufacturer guarantees Copic markers for three years.

Artists search for a marker that lasts, provides good coverage, and won't dry out. Refillable Copic brand markers provide just that and offer acid-free ink as well. The versatile tips allow you to adjust your drawing from thin to thick as desired for your creative project. Copic markers can be used in all types of projects and are favored by scrapbook designers, cartoonists and other artists. Buy Copic markers in four styles: Copic, the original version; Sketch, like a paintbrush; Ciao, a smaller size; and Wide, for background work.

  1. Colors

    • Each type of marker comes in a wide range of colors, with Sketch Markers coming in 346 colors, according to their website. You do not need to buy tons of colors to create beautiful projects with Copic markers. Because of the unique blending capabilities of the markers, you can shade your artwork professionally with as a few as three colors. Copic also makes a white paint to add a few strategic highlights to your projects.

    Papers

    • Test papers first. Use a heavy paper such as watercolor paper. If you do choose a lighter paper, use a piece of scratch paper underneath in case the marker soaks through. Check that your paper does not ink feather, which means the ink bleeds all over the paper. Color over lines printed off an inkjet printer, but test them first just to be safe.

    Blending

    • Color in circles, which decreases streaking. This helps keep the paper wet so you can blend your darker side in more easily. Add extra ink where you want shadows. Use the first color on top of the second color to really blend. Also blend progressively darker shades. Another option is to use a colorless blender to add highlights. The colorless blender will create special effects and push color back from the edges of your drawing.

    Scrapbooks

    • While you can use your Copic markers for journaling and to document important events, you will especially enjoy them if you love to doodle or draw on your layouts. Since they don't fade and are acid-free, they offer the archival quality you want for your scrapbook. Create your own background scrapbook paper or just an accent piece. If you use stamps in your projects, color them in with your Copic markers instead of using ink for a soft or vibrant effect.
