A Red Hat certified technician is responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux network servers. You will need to have experience in basic network administration as well as configuring, programming, testing and implementation of new hardware and software. Red Hat certified system administrator (RHCSA) is Red Hat’s core system administration credential and was renamed to more closely align with Linux administration positions. The company has launched Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 in November 2010 in conjunction with the retitling of this certification and the expanded job duties of system administrators. If you are already RHCT-certified, RHCSA certifications can be issued retroactively up to Enterprise Linux 5.
Achieving RHCSA Certification

Red Hat provides classes and course loads to enable you to achieve RHCSA certification, regardless of whether you have extensive Linux programming experience. Courses are offered in the basics of systems administration, as well as elective paths and advanced skills in Linux, Solaris, and GUI-based systems. After taking the needed courses, you will take a half-day exam in which you will demonstrate the skills and knowledge required for future jobs.

In 2011, opening salaries have ranged from the $68,000 to $92,000 depending on the location of the position. Without the RHCSA certification, the starting salary will be more likely to fall in the $60,000 to $70,000 range. However, additional certifications and courses can increase this starting salary significantly.

THe Red Hat Certified engineer (RHCE) certification willl fit if you are looking to move into more senior-level positions and can demonstrate the knowledge and skill required of a senior system administrator. Red Hat certified architect (RHCA) is a capstone certification available for RHCEs who are able to pass five out of five Expertise Exams on network services, deployment and systems management, clustering and storage management, enterprise visualization and system monitoring/performance tuning. These additional certifications can push the starting salary well past $100,000 per year.
