The "Final Fantasy XI" Red Mage Leveling Guide

“Final Fantasy XI” is an online massively multiplayer roleplaying game published by Square Enix in 2002 and 2003. It works on Windows PC computers and PlayStation 2 game consoles, and allows players to cooperate and compete in a wide range of objectives. Like other “Final Fantasy” games, “Final Fantasy XI” offers several different player classes, or “jobs,” including Red Mage.

  1. Description

    • The Red Mage is a jack-of-all-trades, capable of casting both Black and White Magic, as well as using swords and daggers. Like many generalist game classes, the Red Mage is less skilled at each ability than a specialist. Red Mages can also use enhancement and enfeeblement skills inside a party. Outside of parties, Red Mages do best when using their trades against enemies. If you start the game using this job, you begin with a Scroll of Dia and an Onion Dagger.

    Early Levels

    • Between levels one and 10, use the White Mage, Beastmaster, Puppetmaster, Blue Mage, Black Mage, Warrior or Monk subclasses. Avoid fighting monsters listed as Tough, especially Beastment, which can interrupt spellcasting. As you increase in level and become strong enough to handle fights, change from the Warrior subclass to another option. Levels 15 through 25 may be extremely difficult, since the Red Mage still has a low MP pool and cannot heal effectively.

    Mid Levels

    • Between level 15 and 40, you can begin effectively healing yourself in solo fights or others in a party situation. The Red Mage works best in a support role due to its versatility. Focus on maintaining a good supply of Magic Points at all times. You may wish to spend most of your time in the Valkurm Dunes, where you will receive a quest around level 18. After this point, spend most of your time focusing on spellcasting. By the time you reach level 20, learn both Paralyze and Slow spells, then gravity at 21. Between levels 20 and 30, focus on healing the party and enfeebling enemies.

    Higher Levels

    • Red Mages become very effective party members at higher levels, especially if they use the White Mage and Black Mage subjobs. Make sure you learn Refresh as soon as it's available to you, since it returns MP to you and other players. In parties, high-level Red Mages spend much of their time as main healers or casting Refresh. At level 48, learn the Haste spell to help other players level up. At level 51, acquire an Elemental Staff to give you greater chances of success at related spells.
