Steps on Installing Windows Pack 1 on a Toshiba Satellite M55-S325
Windows packs, or "Service Packs," are free downloads from Microsoft that upgrade and update your operating system software. Service Packs include important security updates, bug fixes and other improvements to the way your operating system works. The best method for updating your M55-series Satellite to Service Pack 1 depends on other system upgrades you have installed.
-
Determining Your Operating System Version
-
Toshiba Satellite M55-S325 model laptop computers were released with Windows XP as the included operating system. However, you may have installed Windows Vista or Windows 7 since the Satellite model's 205 release. Each of these systems has a Service Pack 1 available, as well as additional Service Packs for XP and Vista. Right-click your "Computer" icon and choose "Properties" to view which operating system and service pack you currently have installed.
Preparing Your Computer
-
Plug your Satellite M55-S325's power adapter into the computer and a wall power outlet. Service Packs are large updates that can take approximately an hour to install and place a heavy drain on your computer's battery. Connect your computer to the Internet, either wirelessly or through an Ethernet cable. Dial-up connections may work, but your connection may time out before the Service Pack is downloaded, so high-speed Internet connections work best.

Additional Updates
-
Other software on your computer must be up-to-date before you install Service Pack 1. Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "Programs" or "All Programs," depending on your Windows version, and then select "Windows Update." Select any updates marked as "Important," and then click to install them on your computer. If your system is up-to-date, Service Pack 1 may appear as one of these updates and you can install directly from this screen. For Windows 7, Service Pack 1 is entitled "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932)."
Installing Service Packs
-
The Windows update function will install the software for you without additional input, other than confirming that you want to install the software if your computer's security system attempts to block the changes. For Windows XP, you may need to manually download the update since Service Pack 1 is an outdated update. In this case, navigate to the Microsoft Download Center (microsoft.com/download) and click the "Downloads" link at the top of the page, then click "Service Pack Center." Select "Get older Service Packs" under "Windows XP," and then select "Service Pack 1a." Click "Download" near the top of the Web page, and then select "Open" or "Run" when a dialog box appears. This will immediately begin the installation.
Warning
-
Do not touch any keys or your computer's trackpad until the installation is complete, unless prompted by a message on your screen. Installation may take up to an hour, during which your computer may turn on and off more than once. Do not attempt to manually restart or use the computer until you get a message on your screen stating that installation is complete, or you may cause problems with the installation.
