Curly Hairstyles for Teenage Boys

Teenage boys with curly hair have several hairstyles to chose from.

Curly hair is traditionally harder to cut well than short hair. For boys, the most drastic way to take care of curls is with a buzz cut, but if your son doesn’t want anything that short, consider some basic variations. You should consult with your barber about the best style to suit his face and how much time he’s willing to spend to take care of it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Short

    • Short haircuts tend to be favored by boys and men because they are low maintenance. The shorter the cut, the less work it will take to keep it neat and clean. Depending on how much curl he wants to show, your teenager can choose to have it cut the same length all over, or shorter on the sides and longer on top. A very short cut may eliminate the curl altogether, while slightly longer styles allow it to curl without becoming messy and to be styled in a greater variety of ways.

    Medium

    • If your teen doesn’t mind working with gel and other styling products, he may enjoy a medium-length cut that shows off his curly tresses. Make sure he understands the work that will be involved in keeping it orderly and ask the people at the salon to show him how to style it for himself. Once again, he can choose to have it all the same length, or a little shorter on the sides. Encourage him to pick a style he feels comfortable with, which expresses his personality.

    Long

    • “Long” hair on males still means above the shoulder. This is known as the “surfer” look; how successful it is depends in part on how curly his hair actually is. Longer hair will sometimes pull curl out by its weight, so what are curls in a short cut could become waves in a longer one. Ask for layers to relieve some of the volume of his hair, and to allow it to curl naturally to its best advantage. Once again, he will need to style it with some product to keep it manageable.

    Moisturize

    • No matter the haircut length, keep curly hair manageable by deep conditioners and using anti-frizz serums. Take your teenage son out and buy him some of these products; have him try out a variety to see what works best on him. If he uses mousse or gel on a daily basis, he needs to wash his hair often to keep it clean, and moisturizing conditioners will keep it from drying out. Moist curls are softer and more manageable.
