What to Wear When Attending a Fashion Show
Attending a fashion show, whether it’s at Paris Fashion Week or at a local bridal dress exhibition, presents a dilemma in terms of clothing. You’ll want to look good, but also need to wear practical clothing to meet the demanding day you’ll have at the show. You should also be aware that it’s the models and celebrities people have really come to see, and dress accordingly. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Comfortable and Stylish
-
It’s likely that the venue of the fashion show will be a place where people are expected to dress comfortably but professionally, so don’t turn up wearing a T-shirt and jeans. At the same time, you should aim to feel comfortable and to fit in; this isn’t a party, but a function, and so particularly outlandish clothes may be frowned upon. Showing some enthusiasm for what’s in fashion will help, but don’t try to outdo the models. Aim to be stylish but not over-the-top.
Don’t Splash Out
-
While you’ll want to look your best, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should go and buy an expensive designer outfit especially for the show. During the show you’ll be surrounded by plenty of people wearing stylish clothes, so you’re not going to stand out, and the onus of the event is on the models and designers anyway. Buy a few new garments if you like but don’t waste money you don’t have on clothes especially for one show.

Dresses
-
Dresses are a solid option for what to wear to a fashion show. Dresses never go out of fashion so there’s always some way to wear a dress in a stylish way, but at the same time a dress isn’t overly extravagant and you’ll fit in with the crowd. Dresses also tread the line between casual and more formal, allowing you to combine work and pleasure if you’re at the fashion show in a professional capacity. As fashion journalist Jess Cartner-Morley, writing on the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper website, points out, dresses indicate that you’ve made an effort but are also an efficient all-in-one outfit.
Consider Conditions
-
When deciding on your outfit, remember that you’re going to be sitting for a lot of the day, waiting around, while surrounded by hordes of people. Fashion shows can be busy and stressful, and you may need to have lunch on the go and get to places quickly. As a result, you might want to opt for comfort and functionality above other factors.
No-Nos
-
There are some garments you should just plain avoid wearing at fashion shows. These include ripped jeans and short-shorts, which just look too casual, as well as sweatshirts or jogging pants that are clearly sportswear. Clubbing clothes like tube tops are out too.
