What Are the Functions of Makeup Primer?
A makeup primer, applied before putting on makeup, prepares and protects your face’s skin at the same time. According to Totalbeauty.com, makeup primers are not really essential for every type of skin, but can be helpful to people with oily skin and acne scars. The right makeup primer, however, has several different functions that can be beneficial. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Priming
-
As its name suggests, makeup primers prepare the skin for the application of other makeup products. Applied on the skin after moisturizer and/or sun block has been put on, it gives additional makeup a better “canvas” to work on.
Primer can also smooth the skin by filling in some spots and other skin embellishments. Depending on the ingredients in the product, it can also be beneficial to the skin by providing extra moisture and protection from any harsh chemicals in other makeup products.
Color Correction
-
Makeup primers also help in color correction. When applied before foundation, some primers can correct skin tone to make it radiant and almost perfect in appearance. An example would be green-based primers, which correct and eliminate the appearance of extra redness on skin. Some primers also offer an "illuminating" effect, which means that there are ingredients which give extra shimmer. Illuminating effects make the skin appear well-rested and more radiant.

Sebum Control
-
Most primers contain silica powder and other ingredients designed to absorb excess oil. This reduces the appearance of shiny and oily skin. Primers are advisable for those who have oily skin due to excess sebum production; however, the degree of sebum control depends mostly on the kind of oil-absorbing ingredient added in the product.
Makeup That Lasts
-
A good makeup primer can help also makeup to last all day without the need to retouch. Because of its sebum-controlling property, a primer can keep foundation and blush looking fresh and natural on the skin for a longer period of time. Depending on the quality of the primer, it can also prevent makeup products from caking.
