Rustic Handmade Coffee Table Ideas

A rustic-style room includes minimal ornamentation and natural wood materials, incorporating simplicity with natural elements to create a charming, homey atmosphere. Recycle old architectural supplies to create a rustic coffee table for your home. Handmade coffee table projects may only require adding supports to an existing structure. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Distressed Wood

    • Make a handmade, rustic coffee table using 10-inch-wide pine, cherry or oak boards that are 2 inches thick, cut to the desired length of the coffee table. Strike the boards with different sized chains, different hammer heads, other boards and metal objects to distress them and make them appear old. Stain the wood with a dark, non-glossy stain. Attach the boards together with brackets on the underside of the boards to complete the coffee table top. Distress and attach 2-inch-square wood strips to make rustic coffee table legs.

    Old Window

    • Attach a 2-inch-square wood strip to each corner of an old window to create a rustic, handmade coffee table. Cut the wood strips to equal lengths, and then glue them to the old window with waterproof construction adhesive. Old windows are available from salvage yards, thrift stores and yard sales; if the finish is peeling, chipped or discolored it will add to the rustic appeal of the coffee table. Paint the glass panes with stained glass paint or decoupage flowers onto the underside of the panes to add pops of color to the old window coffee table.

    Reclaimed Wood

    • Make a handmade coffee table from reclaimed barn wood to add rustic appeal to your living room. Reclaimed barn wood, and other types of old lumber, are available from online dealers and locally from architectural salvage yards. Look for planks that are at least 6 inches wide, cut them to length and join them together with brackets on the underside of the table top. Make coffee table legs with 2-inch-square wood strips; stain the new wood to closely coordinate with the reclaimed wood. Distress the new legs by striking them with metal and wood objects to create notches and dents and by sanding the sharp edges smooth.

    Old Shutter

    • An old shutter is also an option for a rustic coffee table top. Distress and glue 2-inch-square legs to the corners of the old shutter to complete the coffee table. Leave the shutter in its rustic form, or paint/stain it to coordinate with the room. Paint or stain the legs to match the shutter. You can find old shutters from antique stores and salvage yards, or you can distress a new shutter to appear old.
