Garbage Bag Costume Ideas

Save

Store-bought Halloween costumes can be expensive, and even homemade ones can be costly and time consuming, if the list of required materials is lengthy. An easy custom-made Halloween costume made from inexpensive, readily-available materials such as trash bags can be just as spooky, innovative and fun to make. The time, money and energy you save can then be spent on preparations such as ghoulishly festive decorations, delicious party food, or a generous stash of candy for trick-or-treaters.

Gumball Machine Costume

  • A trash bag and various colored balloons serve as components for a creative gumball machine costume. Cut two waist-to-ankle-length pieces of red construction or poster paper, to create the gumball machine stand. Cut gray construction paper in the shapes of a coin, coin slot and handle; glue them to one red construction paper piece, with the slot and coin in the middle and the handle off to one side. Punch a hole in each top corner of both red construction paper pieces, and pull and knot strong cord through, to drape them over your shoulders like suspenders, so the red paper hangs from the waist like a skirt.

Replace the drawstring in a clear trash bag with string. Cut the bottom of the trash bag, along the crease, so both ends are open. Along the bottom, cut 2-inch vertical slits, 1 inch apart and 1 inch from the edge, all the way around; thread string through the slits. Hang the plastic bag around your neck to cover your torso, and secure the bag around the waist by pulling the bag's bottom string. Fill the bag with colorful balloons for "gumballs" and pull the bag's top string to secure comfortably around the neck.

Hershey's Kiss Costume

  • Apart from the spooky side of Halloween, the holiday is not complete without a haul of delicious sweets. A fun way to embrace the sweet nature of Halloween is to dress up as a treat. A few trash bags is all you need for a simple Hershey's kiss costume. Cut two leg holes in the bottom of a brown trash bag and an arm hole on each side. Step into the bag and put your legs and arms through the holes.

Bunch up several trash bags and stuff them into the bottom of the brown trash bag, to shape the bottom part of the Hershey's kiss. Gather the top of the bag around your neck and knot loosely. Use a black marker to write "Hershey's" on a cut-out strip of white trash bag, and pin it to your hair for the candy's plume. If you don't have enough hair to pin it on, glue it to a headband or pin it to a brown hat.

Fish Bowl Costume

  • Transform into a human fish bowl this Halloween by simply attaching an aquatically decorated trash bag to your torso. Replace the drawstring of a clear trash bag with string. Cut along the bottom end of the trash bag. Cut 2-inch vertical slits, 1 inch apart and 1 inch above the bag's bottom, all the way around; thread string through the slits. Print out or draw fish bowl-themed pictures such as fish, seaweed, pebbles and fish tank decorations. Cut the pictures out and tape them to the inside bottom and midsection of the bag.

Cut off the handles of a blue plastic recycling bag, and cut slits into the top and bottom of the bag, in the same fashion you did the trash bag. Step into the trash bag and secure around the waist by pulling the bag's bottom string. Fill the bag with bubble wrap and pull the bag's top string to secure under the arms. Layer the recycling bag on top of the trash bag, and secure with existing strings, to create the illusion of water.

Bag of Trash Costume

  • For an unexpected, clever and charmingly easy Halloween costume, don a trash bag as its true character. Put on a black shirt, black pair of pants and black pair of shoes. Cut two leg holes in the bottom of a black drawstring trash bag and an armhole on each side. Step into the bag and put your legs and arms through the holes. Gather the top of the bag around your neck and tie loosely. Perfect the look by attaching real or drawn pieces of (cleaned) trash around your neck, arm and leg holes.
