Serve a variety of healthy and kid-friendly snacks at your child's party.

Ensuring that your child has a healthy balanced diet can be a challenge. Television advertisements for the latest snack craze tempt your child to indulge, and fussy eaters rarely want to try new foods. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein are important components of a young child's diet. Balance the sugar-filled cake at your child's party by serving a variety of healthy snacks that are easy to eat.

  1. Fruits and Vegetables

    • Peel and cut fruits such as apples, bananas and oranges, and serve them with fruit dip or peanut butter. Top frozen yogurt or a scoop of ice cream with fresh berries. Clean and cut vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots and celery. Serve the vegetables with peanut butter or vegetable dip. Arrange fruits and vegetables on small plates and create fun shapes such as hearts or smiley faces.

    Sandwiches

    • Make mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with whole wheat bread. Use cookie cutters to cut the sandwiches into fun shapes. Grilled cheese and mini burgers are other snack options for your toddler's party. Remember to keep the portions small so you don't spoil their dinner.

    Chips & Crackers

    • Serve whole-wheat crackers with mild cheddar, swiss and colby jack cheese cubes or bite-sized vegetables. Make cracker sandwiches with peanut butter and sliced banana or hummus and cucumber. Serve baked potato chips with low-fat ranch dip or salsa.

    Sweets

    • Because it is a special occasion, have some desserts available at your toddler's party. Mini blueberry or chocolate muffins, cookies and cupcakes are options if you aren't serving a decorated cake. If you are serving sweets, balance it with healthy foods like fruits, vegetables or crackers for more nutritious snack.
