Use toy snakes as decorations.

In the past, baby showers tended to be tame affairs that were formed around a color: pink for girls, blue for boys, and green or yellow when the baby's sex was unknown. Today those baby showers still take place, but your nontraditional friends deserve to welcome their son into the world with a baby shower that matches their lifestyles. Think outside of the box and manipulate their hobbies and interests into a nontraditional baby shower theme. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dad's Shower

    • Often baby showers only focus on the mother-to-be and soon-to-arrive baby. Switch things up by hosting a dad's shower. Set up a party where men can celebrate the arrival of a new male. Invite the father-to-be's friends and male coworkers to attend. Decorate the party room with child-friendly tools from the television show "Handy Manny." Serve pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, apple pie and lemonade or beer. Ask each guest to write down a suggestion he wishes someone told him before he became a parent, or one piece of advise he thinks the newest male member of society needs to know. Afterward, turn the television to a sporting event.

    Rock Shower

    • Whether she's a musician or just a music lover, she most likely will enjoy exposing her son to the world of rock-n-roll at a rock-inspired baby shower. Create baby shower invitations and tape them to the back of inflatable guitars. Decorate the party area with guitar silhouettes that have been decorated with baby blue and white, blue stars and microphones. Create a candy bar filled with blue candy-covered chocolate pieces, blue jellybeans, blue lollipops and cookies covered with blue icing. For a game, pass out blank pieces of paper and pens to your guests and ask them to write song titles that include the word "baby" until you tell them to stop. The person with the most titles is the winner.

    Snails and Puppy Tails Shower

    • Mother Goose says little boys are made of "snips and snails, and puppy dog tails," so host a baby shower that incorporates those items. Print invitations on large, sticky labels and apply them to small containers of slime. Place small stickers depicting snails on the invitation. Incorporate puppy tails into the baby shower decor by sticking stuffed puppies head-first into colorful sand buckets. Serve a variety of puppy- and snail-shaped cookies, as well as finger sandwiches, pasta and fruit salads, a vegetable platter and cocktail wienies. Play games that revolve around fairy tales and nursery rhymes.

    Hatchling

    • Hatchlings are young animals that come out of eggs and can be transformed into a boy-friendly baby shower theme. Craft chick-shaped invitations and tie the invites around a pack of chick-shaped marshmallows. Decorate them with pictures of animals that are hatched, such as turtles, birds and frogs. Drape yellow and green streamers around the room and tie helium-filled yellow, white and green balloons to the backs of chairs. Serve green-colored punch, a baby spinach, orange and walnut salad, and roasted chicken. For entertainment, fill a box with plastic Easter eggs containing candy and one egg with a miniature baby. The person who selects the baby-filled egg receives a prize.
