Hands-on activities are an important part of learning.

Learning to obey God is an important lesson in any Christian's life and one that needs to be reinforced throughout a child's life. The Bible contains many examples of times when God asked people to do things and they followed his authority. Children learn by doing and enjoy making crafts they can display or use.

  1. Noah Obeys God

    • Noah obeyed God's instruction even though he may have wondered why he was building an ark. Read the story of Noah's obedience to the children about how God told Noah to build an ark because a great flood was coming. Ask them questions about what it must have been like to Noah to build a large ark even though it wasn't raining yet. Imagine how his neighbors and family reacted to his behavior. Have the children build an ark mobile. Draw a simple picture of an ark such as Noah built. Find pictures to cut out of animals, or have the children draw animal pictures. Hang the ark from the top middle of a hanger, then hang animals from the bottom of the hanger. Discuss how Noah obeyed God despite God's request seeming to have no basis in fact, and despite what Noah's family and friends thought. Ask them to think of times in their lives when obeying God's word is difficult.

    Ten Commandments

    • The story of the Ten Commandments is an important one in obeying God. Read the story of the Moses finding the Ten Commandments. Have the children cut out a template of the two side-by-side tablets that Moses brought to the people. Have the children write each number down on the tablets as you briefly go over each one. Instruct them to glue the tablets onto the bottom of a wide ribbon to use as a bookmark. Give them small objects to glue onto the top of the ribbon, such as sequins, stickers, puffy paint or glitter. Encourage them to remind themselves of the commandments each time they use the bookmark to keep a place in a book they are reading, or the Bible.

    Love Your Neighbor

    • Read Luke 10:27 to the children, and tell them about how God wants them to love other people and treat them as they would want to be treated. Have the children make a cup of kindness tea mix to bring to elderly neighbors, or to any adult neighbor. Have them mix instant tea mix, sugar and a bit of orange drink mix, then pack in baggies. Give them instructions to print out and glue to the outside of the bags. The instructions should say to mix one tablespoon drink mix with hot or cold water for an instant cup of tea.

    Samuel Obeyed God

    • Read the story of 1 Samuel 16:1-3 to the children and explain to them how God asked Samuel to find the new king that God has chosen for the people. Samuel anointed David with oil, showing everyone that David was an important person and would be king because God had appointed him. Explain that Samuel obeyed God because he loved him. Then, do an art project using oil. Give the children crayons to color a picture. Pour a small amount of oil in a shallow pan. Have the children place the picture they drew onto some newspapers, then rub the back of the picture with cotton balls dipped in oil. When the paper is dried, the children can hold it up near some light and see the effect the oil had on the picture.
