Themes for a Bridal Boutique

Brides and grooms come in all shapes and sizes and may require special outfitting.

Weddings are a huge industry. The bulk of it is consumed with traditional affairs but that's no reason why an adventurous entrepreneur can't step outside the box and start up something that is unique. Those who open specialty themed stores can carve out a successful niche, providing just the right touch for the right couple.

  1. Hippie Chic

    • A hippie bridal boutique specializing in the clothing of the era, either vintage or new retro creations, will involve a lot of tie-dyed material for the wedding outfit and bridesmaids dresses; paisley could prevail. Clothe the groomsmen in bell bottoms -- with a special occasion flair of course, perhaps a dress knit rather than denim. Rings and other jewelry incorporating peace signs and other emblems of the time will help fill out the inventory. Add beaded hair bands to the apparel line and don't forget a good selection of incense and plenty of flowers for the hair as well as sandals. A well stocked bin of record albums from the era will provide the soundtrack to a beautiful hippie wedding.

    The Western Style

    • The western wedding boutique will supply a variety of gowns that are easy to move around in -- all the better for the line dancing and hoedown. Incorporate turquoise or copper or other elements indigenous to the west into the clothing line. Weave equine themes into the wedding ring pillows or favors for the bridal party or the bridesmaids and groomsmen's outfits. Display a line of gun themed merchandise, specializing in the Old West styles of weaponry. Feature a line of paper goods with riding motifs, including thank you notes and other stationery, tablecloths and napkins.

    Make It Green

    • The "green" bridal boutique offers a good selection of natural fabric gowns and veils, in both new designs and vintage. Offer consignment jewelry, including vintage wedding and engagement rings. For the reception, offer a line of sustainable fair trade grown coffees and teas as well as locally grown food items. Green boutique owners will be knowledgeable about proper recycling or re-purposing of any excess decorating material as well as ways to make sure any unused food items are distributed to the community instead of going to waste.

    Make It Movies

    • Specialize in movie-themed wedding events. Let the clients pick a decade and help them replicate their favorite characters from the films of the time. Stock plenty of pictures from movies to suggest ideas and then find or create outfits to suit the wedding party's desires. Help them imagine themselves as Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in "Bringing Up Baby" or William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles in the "Thin Man" movies. Of course, couples might have more modern tastes and prefer a "Star Wars" or a "Harry Potter" wedding. Help them realize these with groomsmen in star trooper outfits or both male and female attendants in wizard wear.
