Homemade Baby Headbands & Barrette Clips
Accessorizing can begin at a young age, with baby girls sporting headbands and barrette clips in a variety of designs. Hair accessories for babies can be simple or eye-catching, with small bows or vibrantly colored flowers. Creating homemade baby headbands and barrette clips are simple crafts that can be completed using ready-made or recycled materials. They can be customized for special occasions or everyday wear.

Headband Materials
-
Creating headbands at home opens up the possibilities for the types of materials used. Ready-made headbands can be customized with embellishments, or individuals can create original headbands using different materials. For example, materials found around the house such as old neckties or girls’ tights can be converted into headbands with a little sewing. With ties, the additional fabric can be used to make bows or flowers, while headbands made from tights can be decorated using ready-made or handmade bows and flowers. Headbands can also be crocheted from yarn or made from pieces of lace and ribbon.
Decorating Headbands
-
While the headband itself can be decorative, the addition of embellishments like ribbons, bows, flowers and jewels can help dress up an otherwise simple design. Flowers can be handmade using spare pieces of material, but can also be purchased. For visual impact, large, artificial blooms can be sewn to the headband. Ribbons and faux jewels can be used together or separately to add a subtle style to a baby’s appearance for special events like weddings.

Barrette Styles
-
Finding a barrette that can stay in a baby’s sometimes fine or thin hair can be a challenge. A simple clip barrette is one of the most suitable styles for babies and can be decorated with various embellishments. Velcro can also be used to make buttons that stick to the hair but stay in place without pulling. Snap tape can be used in a similar manner, with the child’s hair held between the two sides of the tape. While more difficult to remove than other barrette types, those made from snap tape may be well-suited to baby girls who pull at their hair decorations.
Decorating Barrettes
-
As with baby headbands, baby barrettes can be decorated with a variety of embellishments. Small rosette-style flowers can be made with pieces of ribbon or lace and attached with a piece of thread or glue. Button shapes, such as flowers or cartoon characters, combined with rosettes also make suitable decorations. Before adding decorations, it is important to consider the type of barrette being used and the weight of the decorating materials. Heavier materials are not suited for Velcro but work well on traditional clips.
