Outdoor Cushion Ideas

Get creative with cushions for outdoor use.

To make cushions, cut two fabric squares to equal size. Place them one atop the other, and sew three of the four sides closed, a 1/2 inch in from the edges. Pack the cushion with pillow stuffing material; then sew closed the final side. And if you want to make some for exterior use, there are several outdoor cushion ideas. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Treatment

    • Use specially treated synthetic fabrics. Manufacturers such as the popular Sunbrella company make fabric that have been specially treated with a solution that allows them to better withstand the damaging effects of sunlight, which can significantly shorten the life of outdoor textiles, and also withstand mildew, which can be equally harmful. These fabrics are inexpensive, easy to clean, and available in a wide range of patterns, colors and materials, including everything from velvet to chenille.

    Application

    • Look for spray-on fabric protection. Ray Bloc and SunArmor are examples of such products. In essence, they do for fabrics what sunscreen does for skin: protects them from the sun. These special solutions, which impart UV protection to the material, are safe for most types of fabric. To apply, simply spray the fabric until damp then allow to thoroughly dry. The sprays adhere better if the fabric is clean, so instead of sewing closed the fourth side of the cushion cover closed, use a zipper or buttons so you can remove and wash it once in a while.

    Natural

    • Use fabrics that naturally have outdoor-safe properties. This option provides less protection than synthetic options, but it still provides some defense from outdoor elements. Such fabrics include canvas, twill, duck, vinyl, cotton, linen, laminated polyester and more. These materials stand up better against sun and moisture and are safe to use on backyard patio furniture or on a boat. And if being environmentally friendly is important, an all-natural fabric such as twill, cotton or linen is a green choice.

    Tips

    • Another good idea for outdoor cushions is ensuring they last longer by properly caring for them. This is especially important with natural fabrics, but even synthetics will benefit from proper care. When cushions are not in use, store them inside. Limit the hours of exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible, and if you can, do not allow cushions to get rained on. And always follow manufacturer’s directions when using such fabric protecting products.
