With the variety of ways to create a bun in your hair, you can wear it year round for almost any occasion. Buns are a cute way to hide long hair in a professional atmosphere, lift thick hair off your neck in warmer weather and keep annoying locks out of your face.
The most simple version is made after hair is dried, straightened and brushed. Hair is combed back into a ponytail at the middle of the head or at the top of the neck, with the strands pulled taut so that no bumps are apparent. The tail is twirled and then looped around the base in a circular motion. The end may either be tucked into the ponytail holder or secured underneath the bulk of the bun with bobby pins. Finish up with hair spray to ensure the look stays.
Less care need be taken with a loose bun. The hair does not need to pulled back so tightly, and the bun itself can be tied loosely. Some strands may shake loose and fall around the face. An even looser version does not complete the ponytail but stops in the middle of the second or third looping of the elastic. This creates a large loop and leaves the ends of the hair sticking out at the base of the ponytail.
The side bun replicates the classic bun but is placed to the side, just behind either ear. It is created with a deep side part and taken to the side opposite the part. These types of buns look best with lots of volume, which can be created by teasing the hair in the ponytail before twirling and looping it.
Provided Princess Leia is not the inspiration, done correctly the double bun can be a very cute style. Create pigtails by forming a middle part from the forehead, around the back of the head to the nape of the neck and tie each section behind the top of the ears. You may make loose or tight buns depending on your preference.
A braided bun adds structured texture to the classic bun. Again, hair should be dried, straightened and brushed before braiding as close to the scalp as possible. Secure the end of the braid and carefully move it around in a circular motion, overlapping itself. Tuck the base underneath the bulk of the bun with bobby pins.
