A Homemade Scary Fairy Costume

Good fairies can be made scary with a few alterations.

A fairy is a mythical being with magical powers that can help, or even curse, those she meets. While some famous fairies have been depicted as male, such as Puck from Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream," they are traditionally female in form, such as in the case of "Peter Pan's" Tinkerbell. Women looking for something outside of the normal angelic fairy costumes can create scary fairies who help rule the night. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Seasonal Fairies

    • Fairies are often associated with nature as they sometimes live in forests and are woodland creatures. Create a woodland fairy costume that focuses on one of the four seasons, and for a dark and scary fairy, use autumn or winter as the inspiration. Wear a leotard and tights in a burgundy color for autumn or silver for winter. Decorate the outfit by gluing fake dead autumn leaves or fake snowflakes all over to be the dark autumn fairy queen or the winter ice fairy. Wear dark or silver wings and use glittery makeup along with dark eyeliner and lipstick to create a scary effect.

    Goth Fairy

    • Dress as a scary goth fairy by mixing a combination of goth clothing items and fairy costume pieces. Wear black fishnet hose and high-heeled boots, and pair them with a black or blood red velvet goth mini-skirt and satin corset. Find some black wings in a costume shop and pair them with other accessories such as a goth fairy tiara with dark stones and a dark magic wand. Complete the look by ratting your hair and spraying it to stand out tall; wear lots of black goth makeup.

    Rocker Fairy

    • Channel your inner heavy metal girl and dress as a scary rocker fairy. Use the elements of a dark rocker girl costume and adapt it to be the fairy of metal music. Wear black, ripped up pantyhose and ankle boots with a lace or net tutu style mini-skirt. On top, wear a black rocker T-shirt for a heavy metal band and be sure to cut off the sleeves and neckband, and tie the bottom in a knot at the waist. Wear black wings and fingerless gloves, preferably in lace.

    Graveyard Fairy

    • Get into the spooky spirit and dress as a graveyard fairy that haunts cemeteries at night. Wear a black leotard or lace-up corset with a flowing gauzy black skirt with jagged hem pieces at the bottom. At any costume shop or Halloween store, find accessories with skulls on them to highlight the graveyard theme. Items may include arm or headbands and wands. Wear black gauzy wings and complete the graveyard look by wearing white foundation makeup with black greasepaint shadows below the eyes and in the hollows of the cheeks.
