Personalize
-
A unique wedding dress does not have to be expensive, or even unique when you find it. For hands-on brides, the best approach may be to find a dress and personalize it yourself. Look for a dress you feel has potential and that you are comfortable in. Often, a bargain or even sample dress will do. Alterations to the cut of the neckline and to the sleeves can drastically change a dress's appearance. A variety of additions can be made to the bodice of the dress, including beading, satin cuffs and lace overlays. A colored sash around the waistline is another bold but simple way to make your dress stand out from the crowd.
Colors
-
White remains the most common and accepted color for wedding dresses, but for brides who desire a unique look, another color may be the perfect choice. This is an approach already common among women marrying for a second time or renewing vows. A dress with a subtle nonwhite accent is a way to break from the norm without coming off as radical. Ivory dresses still resemble traditional white, but are richer and darker in tone. Delicate pastels are also options for those wishing to stand out without straying too far from what is commonly accepted.
Those wishing to break farther from expectations may choose a black dress, though this requires more ambition and skill on the part of the designers and more money from the bride.

Themes

Themed dresses are another option which has grown more popular in recent years. Fairy dresses are one choice. They can vary in terms of how far they break from normal dresses, but generally attempt to convey a sense of magic, whimsy and delicacy. Fairy dresses are usually made from tulle and contain colors other than white. Brides may choose to add only hints of colors and glamor, or commit more fully with beads, strong colors and even wings.
Medieval dresses are another popular theme. Common traits among these include tightly-laced corset bodices and long, elaborate fabric flowing from the waste down. The possibilities for medieval dresses are vast, as they can draw from the styles of a number of periods and countries, as well as being updated for modern sensibilities.
Themed options are many and varied. You may also wish to consider holiday-themed ones for appropriately-timed weddings, beach weddings for something warm and casual, or something Western-themed.
Go Short
-
Challenging the conventions of wedding dress length is another daring move. Brides may wish to bring the dress up to show their legs and have numerous options for doing so. They make choose a cocktail-style dress, lacy ballerina tutu, or an otherwise traditional style which ends above the knees. Short dresses can be complimented with longer trains or pushed even further from the norm by pairing their amended length with different colors.
