You can convert button-down shirts to crafts.

Button-down shirts are a wardrobe staple, yet many of us leave our old button-downs just sitting in the closet for years. Either they don't fit anymore, they are stained or the cut is simply out of style. These old shirts don't have to go to the dump or the local clothing donation center. You can make wonderful crafts with these old shirts, and end up with something brand new.

  1. New Dress

    • Turn that old shirt into a new dress in just a few simple steps. There are many different ways you can do this. It is best to use a very long shirt, or use several shirts to get the correct length. One version is to cut off the neckline and shoulders of the shirt. Fit the remainder of the shirt to your bodice just below the armpits with the buttons down the back. Use the rest of the fabric to make two spaghetti straps and attach them to the top of the dress, or make one long strap to make it a halter dress.

    Funky Skirt

    • This project is good if you have several shirts that you want to combine into one new piece. Cut off all of the sleeves, and then cut the sleeves in half along the seam. Pin the pieces together, with the former wrist bands making the waistband of the skirt and the shoulder seams at the bottom. Alternate colors until the skirt is wide enough for your waist. Finish with a zipper or buttons.

    Clutch or Tote

    • Use various pieces of one shirt or several shirts to make a tote bag or small clutch. The possibilities with this one are endless. You can have the buttons as the closure of the bag or decoration on the front. Use the pocket of the shirt on the outside or inside of the bag for extra space and organization.

    Re-Styled Shirt

    • You can make an old shirt look brand new with just a few simple changes. Add button loops and a sash to make the shirt more trendy. You can also add new sleeves or make the shirt sleeveless. If you are not wearing the shirt because it is too big, add some front darts or change the side seams to improve the fit.

    Apron

    • Another fun craft to make out of an old shirt is an apron. This is a good craft if the shirt is stained because it won't matter that there are a few dirty spots here and there. Cut the front of the shirt into the shape of an apron, and use the other pieces to make a halter strap and waist straps.
