Make your guests wonder what's on that coaster handprint fabric.

Don't pay for items that protect your wood furniture from glass moisture rings. Combine fabric with creativity to save money and meet a practical need with handprint fabric coaster crafts. Start the conversation ball rolling at your next party by making guests wonder what was on your child’s hands during the craft activity.

  1. Felt and Foam

    • Use thin craft foam and a pencil to draw around two children's or adult hands. Cut out the hand images, using a sharp utility knife or scissors. Place a piece of colored felt beneath each piece of foam cutout. The felt needs to be larger than the foam cutouts before you start. Cut the felt to match the hand pattern's shape and size. Glue the piece of felt onto the foam piece bottom, to protect table surfaces during use. Press hands in nontoxic paint and apply to foam printout. The foam and felt handprint work as an attention-getting drink coaster.

    Cotton Painting

    • Place both hands side-by-side onto a 100 percent cotton piece of fabric in a solid color. The material should be large enough for you to cut the two handprints apart later, but still leave an equal amount of cotton on both sides of each handprint, for symmetry. Cover the bottom of the hands with nontoxic fabric paint. Press each hand directly onto the cloth, leaving a painted hand impression. Let the cloths dry. Repaint over the handprints with acrylic paint in the same color for emphasis. Add felt to the bottom of the handprint square afterward with craft glue. This makes an easily portable coaster. For a firmer coaster, hammer the cotton image onto an equal sized piece of board and place felt on the bottom.

    Conversation Coasters

    • Give your children access to cooled melted chocolate. Tell them to eat it with their fingers. Encourage them to get it on the palms and bottom of their hands. Instruct them to press each chocolate-covered hand down onto a piece of white linen cloth. Place the material between two sheets of clear laminate before sealing the image. Cut laminated image into coaster size for use and attach felt to back with craft glue, to prevent movement of drinks during use. Place on your tables at home as a conversation starter.

    Plastic Coaster

    • Use an empty CD container as a template to draw the case image onto a sheet of paper of any color. Moisten the bottom of a child's hand with water and press it onto the paper, staying within the CD image and creating a handprint. Instruct the child to apply glue within the palm and finger design. Provide her with different colors of glitter for decorating the image. Dry and trim to fit paper inside the CD case. The plastic protects the handprint image and provides moisture protection as a drink coaster.
