Assistant theater managers oversee many of the daily aspects of running a movie theater. This position is a blend of administrative duties, sales and quality control. Assistant managers work with both the staff and the public, and must have customer service skills and management experience. Assistant theater managers also are in a good position to advance to movie theater manager.

  1. Administrative Duties

    • Assistant movie theater managers train team members to perform basic duties such as selling tickets. Assistant managers also write the weekly schedule for staff and process the employee payroll. Assistant managers also oversee the staff's maintenance of the theater.

    Customer Service

    • Cashiers are the first point of contact for customers who patronize a movie theater. But if a customer has a problem or complaint, then the assistant manager is the next in line to handle customer service issues. Assistant managers at movie theaters must have excellent communication skills and the ability to resolve disputes without driving away business for the theater.

    Event Promotion

    • Assistant theater managers may come from a variety of backgrounds, such as hospitality or restaurant management, but a knowledge of movies is preferred. Furthermore, the ability to promote upcoming movie events is an essential function of an assistant manager. When a movie theater is hosting a particularly popular event, the assistant manager organizes the staff and theater to keep people from entering the theater without paying. Sometimes barriers must be erected by the staff to keep moviegoers in line outside a theater before the staff can allow them to enter the show.

    Business Strategy

    • A movie theater is a business, and the assistant manager is responsible for helping increase the revenues of the theater. The assistant manager works with upper management to set fiscal goals for revenue generation through event promotion, ticket sales, and concession income. The assistant manager is also responsible for communicating these goals to the staff, and training the staff to meet these financial expectations. While assistant theater managers may enter this position without higher education, an associate degree with management training is often preferred.
