Add a sumptuous spread of gemstones to a wedding.

The hue and sparkle of gemstones can inspire the decorations for a wedding in many ways. Take color cues from the gemstones in the wedding rings, or the birthstones of the bride and groom. The gemstones used in the wedding decor don't have to be real to make a lasting impression on the guests. Real and fake, gemstones will give the wedding a lavish feel and make the new couple feel like royalty.

  1. Gem Encrusted Candles

    • Use pillar candles for this project; white candles will best show off the color and sparkle of the gemstones. Purchase gemstones mounted on pronged metal backs. Press the prongs of the gemstones into the side of the candle. Use one large gemstone on the side of the candle to make an elegant statement, or create a dazzling pattern around the candle with clusters of smaller gemstones. Use the candles to light up the ceremony, as centerpieces at the reception, or as wedding favors for guests.

    Scatter Gems

    • Scatter gems are solid acrylic or plastic toy gemstones in the shape of cut diamonds. Scatter gems come in many different colors, and can be used as wedding decor anywhere that confetti would typically go. Sprinkle the gemstones at place settings, around centerpieces and at the gift table. Large scatter gems can even be used as cupcake toppers, to garnish the bottom of a champagne flute, or as fillers for glass vases of flowers.

    Gemstone Cake

    • Cake makers can do some pretty spectacular things with cast sugar, including sugar gemstones that look like the real thing. Keep the wedding cake elegant, but ask to have it adorned with sugar gemstones. For a jewelry box effect, have the cake decorator form the cast sugar into sparkling pieces of gemstone jewelry, and drape dazzling necklaces along the tiers. Rather than topping the cake with the conventional bride and groom, do so with replicas of the couple's wedding bands.

    Gemstone Monogram

    • If gemstones are part of the couple's history together, they may consider working a gemstone image into their monogram. Use image editing or illustration software to incorporate the bride and groom's initials into a design with an image of a gemstone. A graphic designer could also do this for a fee. Once a digital file of the monogram design is finished, it can be printed onto stationary and napkins, transferred onto the cake, etched into glasses or embroidered onto handkerchiefs.
